The OAS and the LGBTTTI&SW Coalition commemorate the International Transgender Day of Remembrance

The Secretary General of the OAS and the LGBTTTI and Sex Workers Coalition of the Americas celebrated the International Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20th issuing a joint press release highlighting how, across the Americas, transgender persons are target of systematic violence, discrimination and human rights violations, including transfemicides, sexual assaults and other forms of torture. Data provided by the RedLacTrans show that perpetrators are state actors in the 28% of the cases that have been documented. In this dire situation, an overwhelming majority of OAS member states have failed so far to fully implement the Advisory Opinion 24/17 of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights providing a legal framework for legal gender recognition.
