Our work in Africa focuses on those subregions where human rights work has often been overlooked and under resourced – including Anglophone and Francophone West Africa and Francophone Central Africa.
In each subregion, we work with “anchor partners” to support more nascent movement actors in identifying and addressing priority needs. We then link these movements to regional advocacy opportunities – including advancing domestic issues with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. These regional successes are then used to catalyze work back at the domestic level.
A film highlighting the work we and our partners have done increasing attention to LGBTIQ issues within the African system for the protection of human rights.
As the coordinator of the Coalition of LGBTTTI Organizations Working in the Context of the OAS, our work promotes partners’ use of various mechanisms within the Inter-American system for the protection of human rights.
Including the OAS General Assembly, Summit of the Americas, and the work of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) – to increase attention to domestic human rights challenges and to generate regional tools that can be used domestically by partners to address these issues.
While we seek to provide sustained support to partners in our target regions, we also acknowledge that needs exist in other parts of the world.
While we often cannot provide sustained support to partners in our target regions, Synergía’s often supports short-term engagements in these regions in instances where local movements can sustain the use of this support beyond our direct involvement.
In these instances, we consider opportunities in other regions based on the value of the contributions we offer and the opportunity to transition our leadership of specific interventions to partners for longer term impact.
Your support will further our work by offering flexible resources that will be used to advance our provision of capacity strengthening, funding, and strategic guidance to our partners. The flexibility of this support is vital when there is an opportunity to take advantage of a quickly emerging opportunity or when responding to an emerging crisis. This ultimately creates more adaptive and resilient movements that are necessary to ensure human rights for all.
