Synergía and Brazilian Organizations advocate for Civil Society Participation at the OAS

A group of eighteen activists met in Brasilia from April 15th to 17th, 2024, aiming to strengthen the advocacy efforts towards the Inter-American Human Rights System. Led by Synergía, in partnership with the Brazilian CSO Conectas and the Sexuality Policy Watch (SPW), the group was formed by representatives of civil society organizations acting at the national level in Brazil, including Anis – Instituto de Bioética, Artigo 19, Associação Brasileira de Lésbicas, Gays, Bissexuais, Travestis, Transexuais e Intersexos (ABGLT), Centro Feminista de Estudos e Assessoria (CFEMEA) and Portal Catarinas – and a representative of the Paraná State Public Defender’s Office

 

On April 15th, the group met with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with the National Secretary for the Rights of LGBTQIA+ People of the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship. The activists advocated for an active role from Brazil in supporting the meaningful participation of civil society at the OAS and the need to advance the national implementation of human rights mechanisms. 


In addition to the meetings with representatives of the Brazilian government, the group discussed the key challenges and potentialities of the Inter-American Human Rights System, as well as the key strategies to promote human rights at the regional level.
