Synergía, PUICA and RENIEC host a Subregional Seminar on the Recognition of Gender Identity

On April 19-20, Synergía, the OAS Universal Civil Identity Program in the Americas (PUICA) and the Registro Nacional de Identificación y Estado Civil de Perú (RENIEC) co-hosted in Lima, Perú the Subregional Seminar on Recognition of Gender Identity. The event, opened by Carmen Velarde, National Director of RENIEC, Rebeca Omaña Peñaloza, Director of PUICA, and Stefano Fabeni, Executive Director of Synergía, was attended by approximately 40 civil registry representatives from Perú, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, Ecuador, Bolivia, with contributions from Honduras and Mexico.  

 

The second subregional seminar (following a previous event in Mexico City) featured featured interventions of the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of LGBTI Persons of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Roberta Clarke, as well as interventions of a lawyer of the Inter-American Court on Human Rights and civil society representatives. 

 

The seminar aimed at building opportunities for learning, sharing and reflection upon the situation of discrimination and violence that trans individuals face in the region and how the landmark advisory opinion 24/17 by the Inter-American Court plays a pivotal role in addressing such challenges. PUICA and civil registries officials shared their best practices and opportunities for technical cooperation.
