Synergía and PUICA host webinar on gender identity recognition in the CARICOM

The OAS Universal Civil Identity Program in the Americas and Synergía hosted on February 24th a webinar on “Legal Recognition of Gender Identity and the Implementation of the Advisory Opinion 24/17 in the CARICOM countries,” with support of the Mission of Canada to the OAS.

Speakers were Ambassador Hugh Adsett, Permanent Representative of Canada to the OAS; Rebeca Omaña Peñaloza, PUICA Coordinator; Commissioner Roberta Clarke, Rapporteur on the Rights of LGBTI persons of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights; Westmin James, Lecturer in Law at the University of West Indies; Veronica Álvarez Nuñez, OAS Consultant; and Alexus D’Marco, Executive Director of the United Caribbean Trans Network.

The event offered an overview of the current situation of legal recognition of gender identity in Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Haiti, and Jamaica, who are the four CARICOM members of the OAS Latin American and Caribbean Council of Civil Registry, Identity and Vital Statistics (CLARCIEV). Closing remarks were offered by Synergía’s Executive Director who officially launched the English and French version of the Guidelines for the Implementation of the Advisory Opinion n. 24 on Legal Recognition of Gender Identity, previously published in Spanish in 2020.
