Webinar on Recognition of Gender Identity of Migrants, Refugees and Asylum-seekers

On February 17, Synergía and the OAS’ Universal Civil Identity Program in the Americas (PUICA) hosted a webinar on the Recognition of Gender Identity of Migrants, Refugees and Asylum-seekers. Acknowledging the impact that social and political crises in Latin America have on migration of LGBTQI+ individuals, the panelists explored the situation that particularly affects trans individuals, whose identity is oftentimes denied in their country of origin, exposing them to additional layers of marginalization, discrimination and exclusion.

The webinar, moderated by Rebeca Omaña Peñaloza, director of PUICA, was opened by the Permanent Representative of Costa Rica before the OAS Ambassador Alejandra Solano Calbalceta. Panelists were Alex Pérez Alvarez (Caribe Afirmativo, Colombia), Cristina Sousa Rodríguez (Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees), Fernando Ojeda (Migración Diversa, Chile), Stacy Velazquez (OTRANS, Guatemala). Closing remarks were offered by the Permanent Representative of Spain before the OAS Ambassador Carmen Montón Giménez.
