Synergía and the Coalition LGBTTTI& TS working with the OAS deplore the killing of Andrea González

Synergía – Initiatives for Human Rights, along with the Coalition of LGBTTTI and Sex Workers Organizations of Latin America and the Caribbean working with the Organization of American States (OAS), deplores with outrage the brutal murder of Andrea González, director of the organization OTRANS Reinas de la Noche and member of the Red Latinoamericana y del Caribe de Personas Trans.

Andrea was murdered in a shooting on June 11 in Guatemala City, despite having reported to the police the countless death threats that she had received in the weeks before.

Andrea was a tireless advocate, both domestically and internationally. In particular, she was a representative for the work of our Coalition before the Organization of American States (OAS), and participated in many advocacy initiatives before Member States and the Inter American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).

We demand that Guatemalan authorities investigate Andrea’s murder with due diligence, according to international criteria of impartiality, independence, speed, and transparency.

We also ask the Inter American Commission on Human Rights and the international community to repudiate this and the endless list of transfemicide that have occurred with impunity in Guatemala, and pay attention to the situation of risk for LGBTI human rights defenders in Guatemala and Central America.
